This is the first time I have experienced loss – even though she is still alive.
She is only 56 and I am her 35-year-old daughter. She has been left with complete paralysis and severe brain damage. It just feels so cruel and unfair.
She was always so full of life and lit up any room she entered with her huge warmth and laughter.
We were so close and used to do so much together. I don’t know how I am going to cope now. It just doesn’t feel real.
DEIDRE SAYS: Health problems like this can be the hardest things to come to terms with.
Your mum is still here, yet you have effectively lost the parent you loved and have such fond memories of.
It is painful to accept the change and it will help if you can find understanding and informed support near you through the Stroke Association (stroke.org.uk, 0303 3033 100).
