My partner has walked out saying he wants someone younger and fitter

DEAR DEIDRE: MY partner has walked out saying he wants someone younger and fitter so he can share some good times.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years ago and our relationship has gone downhill ever since, along with my health. I am a woman of 54. He is 43, and we were together ten years.

It feels especially bitter because I supported him in starting his business.

Four weeks ago he told me he was leaving to stay with his brother. His phone bill showed he was texting a number regularly. A woman answered when I rang, admitted she knew him, then blocked me.

I no longer drive, so I am stuck, feeling fragile and unloved. He called round for some belongings and said we can only be friends. I know it’s over.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am sorry your partner has turned out to lack the strength of character to support you, but see that as his failing. Don’t let this defeat you.

Confide in friends and find understanding support through the MS Society (, 0808 800 8000). You can join interactive sessions so you don’t feel so alone.
