Nationwide cat litter shortage at supermarkets sends pet owners into fury

A nationwide shortage of cat litter has left pet owners counting the cost after weeks of empty supermarket shelves.

Angry animal lovers are demanding answers after Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons all announced supply issues.

Stores are struggling to refill their own-brand litter following the collapse of long-term suppliers Bob Martin.

That means thousands of customers have had to pay sometimes up to 50 per cent for pricey premium brands – or go without.

Bob Martin fell into administration in November and parts of the business were sold to Pets Choice, a rival brand. But there has been a delay in production since contracts were exchanged and a big shortage he left cat owners furious.

Many have taken to twitter to register their frustration – and Pets Choice couldn't confirm exactly when stock levels will be back to normal.

One Tesco shopper tweeted: "Is there a national shortage of Tesco own brand £1.84 10L cat litter? Are you having issues with supplier?

"Any expected back in Gateshead? My cats are very fussy."

Another fed up cat owner asked Asda online: "Why have the shelves been empty for weeks I can't afford double price alternatives."

A Sainsbury's shopper put: "Hello what’s happening with your cat litter?

"I need some desperately for my cats and my store hasn’t had any since before Christmas."

Morrisons has had problems too and one shopper demanded: "Not been able to get your own brand cat litter for weeks now.

"Been to all the stores in Bradford but nothing. Any idea when this issue might be resolved?"

Asda replied to a customer saying: "We're aware of a supply issue with cat litter, which we're working to get resolved as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused here."

Tesco say the are "working hard to resolve this" while Sainsbury's apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers.

Morrisons, meanwhile, told a shopper on Twitter : "We are having some supply issues with cat litter at the moment and unfortunately don't have a definite date of when this will be sorted."

Pets Choice told The Sun they believe stock will return to normal in “the coming weeks” but stopped short of giving an exact date.

A spokesperson said: “Pets Choice/Bob Martin are pleased to confirm that all listings with major customers have now been instated after the transition period following on from the company changes in November.

“Bob Martin pride themselves in making quality healthcare products and can confirm that Felight Cat Litter is now available to all retailer.

“As such, distribution of this product will be back to normal in the coming weeks.”
