Riley Keough is slowly finding ways to smile again after her brother’s suicide a year ago.
Keough, 32, revealed that she is focusing on living one moment at a time in the wake of Benjamin Keough’s death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in July 2020.
“I’m just generally trying to be grateful for everything at the moment, trying to operate in love, and keep my heart open, and give and receive love,” the “Zola” actress told InStyle in a new interview.
“And not in a woo-woo way, because I definitely have hard days, and all kinds of pain and suffering and all that. But I think when you realize that’s part of it, and your expectation isn’t to just be feeling joy, that’s been a real shift for me in finding those moments and things to smile about.”
Keough, who became a death doula eight months ago, added that she is trying her best to allow herself to feel all of her emotions.
“Once I’ve started doing that, I can kind of find more joy in the little things, and smile at cups of coffee and flowers,” she said. “It’s much easier for me.”
The daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough noted that she is also “really consciously trying to be present” and trying “not use anything as any kind of escape” while she processes her grief.
She previously paid tribute to Benjamin in an emotional Instagram post ahead of her first Christmas without him and got his name tattooed on her collarbone.
He was 27 years old.
