Robert De Niro speaks out about ‘difficult’ split from wife Grace Hightower
Robert De Niro is speaking out about his split from Grace Hightower, his wife of more than 20 years.
In a statement provided to USA TODAY by his representative, Stan Rosenfield, the two-time Oscar winner said, “Grace and I have two beautiful children together. We are entering a period of transition in our relationship which is a difficult but constructive process. I honor Grace as a wonderful mother and ask for privacy and respect from all as we proceed to develop our roles as partners in parenting.”
De Niro, 75, who was previously married to actress Diahnne Abbott before divorcing in 1988, embarked on his second marriage to Hightower, 63, in 1997, a decade after they began dating.
Quickly, the two had marital troubles, and De Niro filed for divorce in 1999. Five years later, they renewed their vows, with two judges present, People magazine reports. “So they can make sure this one sticks,” De Niro reportedly said.
The former couple shares two children: Elliot, 20, and Helen Grace, 6.
