Sure, You Know Your Sun Sign, But Do You Have a Day Chart or Night Chart?
You must know by now that there are deeper levels to astrology than just your Sun sign. There’s your Moon sign, Rising sign, Venus sign, Mercury sign…you get the idea. In fact, you may not feel purely like your Sun sign most of the time, because there is your entire birth chart to consider. A super simple way to unlock more knowledge about your unique cosmic makeup is to determine whether you have a day or night chart. It’s more than just being born in the day or at night—it’s about the placement of your Sun.
The concept of a day or night chart is an ancient astrological concept known as sect. The signs and visible planets are divided into two sects: diurnal (day) or nocturnal (night). The sect describes how the energies will work within your chart. Here’s a quick guide.
So, how can you tell if you have a day or night chart?
First, look up your birth chart by putting your birth time, date, and location into a free birth chart calculator. Now, find the horizontal line starting on your Rising sign (marked by the letters AC or ASC) in your chart and determine which side of the horizon the Sun is on—or take a look at the part of your chart describing which house each planet is in. If your Sun is above the horizon line or in houses 7-12, you have a day chart. If your Sun is below the horizon line or in houses 1-6, you have a night chart. Sound complicated? Take a look at Lizzo’s birth chart as an example of a day chart, or Taylor Swift’s birth chart as an example of a night chart.
Day or diurnal charts are more outwardly expressive (a.k.a. more the star of the show), while night or nocturnal charts are more on the emotionally receptive end of the spectrum (a.k.a. the screenwriter behind the scenes). Essentially, in a day chart, the diurnal planets (the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, and sometimes Mercury) have a stronger influence and in a night chart, the nocturnal planets (the Moon, Venus, Mars, and sometimes Mercury) rule. (Yeah, don’t forget to check your Mercury! If your Mercury is towards the right of the Sun, it’s diurnal. If it’s towards the left, it’s nocturnal.)
If You Have a Day Chart…
If your Sun is placed above the horizon, you have a day chart. You tend to be more expressive, outgoing, and extroverted. You can act a lot like your Sun sign and you have an energetic and open approach to life. This is especially true if you are a Leo Rising (when the Sun rules your chart) or if your Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn are in diurnal zodiac signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, or Aquarius).
If You Have a Night Chart…
If your Sun is below the horizon, you have a night chart and you are on the more reserved, emotional, and receptive side. You shy away from the spotlight and aren’t as much of an open book as your day chart friends. Your Moon sign may resonate more with you, especially if it’s placed in a nocturnal sign (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, or Pisces). You tend to lead with your emotions (cue the waterworks!) and you use your intuition before making your next move. If your Moon, Venus, and Mars are also placed in nocturnal signs, they can be a positive source of power for you.
