The best and worst towns and cities for solo buyers in the UK

If you’re looking to take the plunge and get on the property ladder by yourself in the near future, it’s important to keep location in mind.

New research has revealed the best and the worst cities and towns for solo buyers in the UK.

Data shows the most affordable areas for people buying on their own, as well as the least affordable ones.

Scooping the top spot as the most affordable location is Bradford. It’s estimated the average price of a one-bed in the West Yorkshire city is £67,370, which means typical mortgage repayment and living costs would use up around 43% of an average monthly income.

Others places which rank high for affordability include Derby, Belfast, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Stoke-on-Trent and Leicester. Similarly, in these locations the average mortgage repayment plus living costs would be less than half of the average monthly income.

Elsewhere, popular cities like Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield all placed within the top ten for affordability, whilst Newcastle, Cardiff and Edinburgh made it into the top 20.

However, on the other end of the spectrum, London (rather unsurprisingly) was shown to be the least affordable spot for solo buyers, with the average one-bed priced at an eye-watering £454,937. In the capital a typical mortgage repayment with the addition of living costs is around 97% of the average monthly income. 

Brighton and Hove has been found to be the second least affordable area with mortgage and living costs taking up a total of 76% of monthly earnings. The average price for a one-bed there is £249,902.

Reading and Manchester follow close behind – although both are still significantly cheaper than London. The average price for a one-bed in commuter hotspot Reading is £226, 862 (which is less than half the price of London) while in Manchester it’s £155,768, according to data from Coulters Property.
