How to Walk in High Heels Hacks, Make Stilettos Comfortable


We all know that, in terms of the way they look, heels are the way to go if you want to look fly as heck. Unfortunately, though, walking in them (especially for long periods of time) can get tough. And, like you, we’re always looking for solutions that’ll assist in avoiding blisters and cutting up the backs of our ankles. Plus, it would be nice to feel like we’re not about to face plant at any given moment. Don’t you agree?

Luckily, we’ve done some extensive research for hacks that’ll make your next heel-wearing experience a pleasant one (prom anyone?). The best part is, most of the things you’ll need you probably already own! Ready to find out all of the tips and tricks that exist for walking in heels? We’ve got a bunch! Check ’em out:

Start small.

This may seem sort of obvious, but walking in heels is a skill that must be developed. And, as with every skill, it’s essential to start with the basics. That being said, don’t put pressure on yourself to walk in a pair of 5-inch stilettos just because they look good with your outfit. Instead, rock an adorable pair of kitten heels first and work your way up to the sky-high bad boys.

Sure, kitten heels may not look as chic as the stilettos in the closet, but the alternative is walking in heels you don’t know how to strut in, and trust us — when you can’t walk in your shoes, people can tell. Do you know when they can really tell, though? When you face plant into the pavement. Yeah… it’s not a good look.

Walk heel to toe.

It’s natural to want to put pressure on your toes first rather than your heel when you’re wearing stilettos. Well, we’re here to tell you that you’ve been doing it all wrong and things need to change.

Walking in heels will become MUCH easier once you start walking heel to toe, mainly because your heels can bear a level of pressure that your toes simply can’t. Try it! It can’t hurt… at least not more than your toes already do.

Spray feet with dry shampoo before leaving the house.

One of the biggest issues we face when wearing high heels is that our feet get super sweaty and start slipping, and once that happens it’s ALL over. Blisters and scrapes start as soon as the sweat begins and, obviously, we don’t want any of that. Not now, not ever!

Interestingly enough, spraying your foot with dry shampoo will help you avoid this situation entirely! Why? Because it’ll soak up sweat before slipping even occurs. Look at that… problem solved!

Moisturize, then slip into your shoes with damp feet.

Honestly, when we first came across this hack we were a little bit confused. Run your feet under cold water, apply lotion and slip your feet into your shoes while damp? How could that possibly work. Well, you guys… it just does!

You see, keeping your feet moisturized is key to being able to walk in your heels because it’ll help you stay blister-free and feeling wonderful. Remember, though, your feet have to be damp — not wet — for optimal results.

Put clear gel deodorant on your heels.

Are you a longtime sufferer of blisters as a result of wearing heels for long periods of time? We’ve been there, and we know it gets painful and really, really difficult to walk. What you may not know, though, is that the stuff you put under your armpits each morning can help take care of that. Weird… we know.

Turns out, if you apply a bit of clear gel deodorant on the heels of your foot, you won’t sweat nearly as much and, therefore, you’ll stop the slipping that causes blisters. This is similar to the dry shampoo hack, but we think you should try both and see which one works best for you.

Put panty liners in your shoes.

If you’re not into the idea of using deodorant or dry shampoo to soak up sweat, there are other options. All you have to do is — wait for it — place a panty liner in your shoe, which will also soak up moisture.

So, why does this work? Well, by soaking up the moisture you’re avoiding slipping, and, as we all know, slipping can cause two TERRIBLE things to happen: blisters and falling. If you’re trying to stay away from both those things, get the panty liners out STAT.

Rough up the soles with sandpaper.

Slipping and falling in heels is a major fear and, honestly, happens to the best of us.

When shoes are new, the bottoms are often smooth as a babies bottom. Sure, it looks nice, but when you walk on a wood or tile floor there might as well be banana peels under your feet. Avoid an embarrassing fall by using sandpaper to rough up the bottoms before the first wear. If you don’t, you may regret it later.

Place a bag of water in each heel and pop in the freezer.

We know this may sound strange, but a great hack to help you walk better in your heels is to stick bags of water inside them and freeze the shoes overnight. We told you it was bizarre!

The truth is, one of the reasons your heels are so uncomfortable to walk in is because they’re too tight in all the wrong places. By freezing bags of water inside them overnight, you’ll be stretching them out and, in turn, making them easier to walk in for future wears.

This hack also works if you accidentally bought a pair of shoes that are a little bit too small, but can’t find the receipt to return ’em.

Tape your third and fourth toes together.

Walking in heels can start to hurt after a short period of time, but wearing them without any agony can actually be a reality if you tape your third and fourth toes together. We know… we’re just as shook as you are.

So, why does this help relieve pain? It prevents strain on the nerve that runs between these two toes and, more importantly, prevents pain. Yup! Whether it’s 8 a.m. or 5 p.m., you’ll still be comfortably strutting your stuff in heels, and all it took was a little tape. What a miracle!

Apply lip balm to the back of your heels.

One of the absolute worst things about wearing heels is that they can totally destroy the backs of your ankles. As you all know, it’s super painful when this happens, but it’s also gross, too! So, how do you avoid it? Two words: lip balm.

If you’re in a pinch, grab the chapstick out of your back and rub them onto your heels. Instead of damaging your skin, the balm will help the shoes glide smoothly against your ankles without causing any problems. Sounds like a win to us!
