49ers linebacker Reuben Foster arrested on domestic violence charge hours before game

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery Saturday night after a woman alleged Foster "pushed her in the chest" and "slapped her with an open hand," Tampa police said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports and other outlets.

Police responded to the Grand Hyatt hotel where officers observed Foster and a woman "involved in a verbal altercation," according to the statement from police.

"The victim stated that during the altercation Foster slapped her phone out of her hand, pushed her in the chest area, and slapped her with an open hand on the right side of her face," the statement read. "Officers observed a one-inch scratch on the victim's left collar bone."

Police said the two "lived together in the past and they were involved in an on-again-off-again relationship over the past three years."

Foster was taken into custody by Tampa police at 9:10 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay for the single count of misdemeanor domestic battery. He remained in custody as of early Sunday and was ineligible for bond, per the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office website.

The arrest was Foster’s second related to a domestic violence allegation in less than a year.

Foster, 24, will likely have his first court appearance Sunday morning, where he could be allowed to post bond. The 49ers play the Buccaneers at 1 p.m. ET.

Foster was already listed as questionable with a hamstring injury on the 49ers’ injury report.

A message left with a 49ers spokesperson by USA TODAY Sports was not immediately returned early Sunday morning.

Foster was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the NFL's policies on personal conduct and substance abuse related to his February arrest on domestic violence and three other charges in Los Gatos, Calif., and a marijuana possession arrest a month prior in Alabama.

The Santa Clara County (Calif.) District Attorney's Office initially charged Foster with felony domestic violence in April, although Foster’s ex-girlfriend recanted the allegation. That led the domestic violence charge to be dropped.

Foster pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor weapons possession charge and was sentenced to community service earlier this year.
