Anthony Davis may prefer Lakers, but don’t count Celtics out

Three NBA team executives told USA TODAY Sports they are operating under the premise that the Los Angeles Lakers are Anthony Davis’ preferred destination and that any other team that acquires him from New Orleans will be getting a short-term rental until Davis can become a free agent in 2020.

The people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about Davis while he is under contract with the Pelicans.

While this comes as no surprise, it confirms Davis' wishes – which previously had been inferred via social media posts and offhanded comments.

Earlier this week, Davis’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, told ESPN that his client will not sign an extension with the Pelicans and that Davis wants a trade.

The NBA on Tuesday fined Davis $50,000 for “violating a collectively-bargained rule prohibiting players or their representatives from making public trade demands.”

Paul declined comment when reached by phone on Thursday.
