Dirk van Duijvenbode’s nine-darter attempt thwarted by fly on Ally Pally stage

A fly disrupted proceedings at Ally Pally this afternoon after it buzzed in the face of Dirk van Duijvenbode as he attempted a nine-dart finish.

The Dutchman progressed to the last 16 of the World Championships following a memorable comeback against Ross Smith.

Van Duijvenbode found himself three sets down, but fought back to win four in a row to claim victory in dramatic fashion.

Though his comeback was nearly thwarted when a fly decided to get a little too close to the action during the second set.

With things evenly poised at two legs each, van Duijvenbode kicked things off by throwing 180, but his momentum was scuppered when the insect landed right on the dart board – stopping him in his tracks.

The 29-year-old saw the funny side, giving a wry smile before playing up to the crowd … before making an absolute mess of his next throw.

It looked as if the damage had been done, and Ross stormed to a three set lead, but you can never count a Dutchman out at Ally Pally.

Van Duijvenbode's best finish at a World Championships was last year where he reached the quarter finals.

He'll face the winner of Kim Huybrechts and Gerwyn Price for a place in this year's last eight. Here's hoping he'll bring some insect repellent with him for the quarters!
