England vs New Zealand player ratings: Sam Underhill and Owen Farrell rated and slated after Red Rose push All Blacks the distance

The Red Rose were brilliant for the first half hour, but the All Blacks slowly turned the screw, with Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie changing the game.

But there were some England stars who really stepped up and showed their calibre, here is how they rated…

Ben Moon 6 – Did not look out of place in only his second international test. Can nail down a prop berth long-term ahead of Japan.

Dylan Hartley 8 – Huge captain’s performance, and a try to boot from a brilliant maul. Once he was taken off the line-out went to pot.

Kyle Sinckler 6 – Threw some sublime hits deep in the New Zealand half and gave the All Blacks front row plenty to think about.

Maro Itoje 7 – Did the job everyone expects of the big man. The line-out battle with Retallick was incredible.

George Kruis 5 – Unfussy and solid. Had a massive role opposite Whitelock and Retallick but could not really get at them and unfortunately picked up a calf strain.

Brad Shields 6 – Had issues in the first half that required a HIA. Second-half knock-on in the line-out was frustrating.

Sam Underhill 9 – incredible tackle count and set the tone for England’s intensity. The back row war was always going to be key, Underhill won it alone.

Mark Wilson 5 – Everyone will just go on about the loss of Billy Vunipola, Nathan Hughes and Sam Simmonds, but Wilson did well.

Ben Youngs 7 – Solid, but never got his box kicking going. Still his best England performance since that horrible injury suffered against Italy.

Owen Farrell 7 – Fired up and intense, Farrell plays his best when right on the edge. Getting into spats with the ref was unnecessary, but nearly got England over the line.

Jonny May 7 – The England back three might not be settled yet, but May is assured of his spot. Running the right lines at the right times.

Ben Te'o 6 – Could never really get going, but made some neat tackles and made some line breaks. Should Jones still consider using Farrell at 12?

Henry Slade 6 – Like a Duracell Bunny for the first half hour, the centre wanted the ball and wanted to tackle. But faded in the second half.

Chris Ashton 8 – On a single moment his performance hinged. That second-minute try rolled back the years and all those Eddie Jones doubts evaporated into thin air.

Elliot Daly 7 – Incredible catch on the touchline, flicking the ball back into play, summed up the confidence Daly played with. Easily won the full-back battle for the first 30 minutes.

Jamie George 4, Alec Hepburn 5, Harry Williams 5, Charlie Ewels 5, Courtney Lawes 7, Danny Care 6, George Ford 6, Jack Nowell 6.

Karl Tu’inukuafe 6, Codie Taylor 7, Owen Franks 6, BRODIE RETALLICK 9 (MAN OF THE MATCH), Sam Whitelock 8, Liam Squire 7, Ardie Savea 7, Kieran Read 7; Aaron Smith 6, Beauden Barrett 8, Reiko Ioane 7, Sonny Bill Williams 7, Jack Goodhue 6, Ben Smith 6, Damian McKenzie 7.
