England's Danny Rose and Alex McCarthy withdraw from squad with injuries and will miss Uefa Nations League clashes against Croatia and Spain

The pair will miss Uefa Nations League clashes against Croatia on Friday and Spain on Monday.

Danny Welbeck is a doubt to face Croatia having sat out of training today, but remains with the squad.

Tottenham left-back Rose, 28, and Southampton keeper McCarthy, also 28, will return to their respective clubs.

Both players were nursing minor injuries as they arrived for international duty this week and missed training yesterday, alongside Welbeck.

Rose suffered a recurrence of a groin problem in Saturday's 1-0 win over Cardiff.



McCarthy played 90 minutes of Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea but arrived for England duty with a knock.

The double KO means Ben Chilwell is set to make just his second international appearance after coming on in the Three Lions' win over Switzerland last month.

The Leicester defender replaced the injured Luke Shaw in the squad earlier this week.

Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and MarcusĀ Bettinelli are all competing for the keeper spot.

England travel to Croatia on Friday for a behind-closed-doors clash at the Stadion HNK Rikeja.

Uefa handed down the two-game punishment to the World Cup finalists after a swastika was painted on the pitch in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy in June 2015.

England boss Gareth Southgate has told his players to watch Barcelona's La Liga clash against Las Plamas last October which was played without any fans watching for preparation.

The Three Lions then take on Spain at the Benito Villamarin.

England lost their opening Nations League clash against Spain but are ahead of Croatia on goal difference.
