Monday is Tax Day across America, but one NFL star has his own self-imposed deadline.
And the Giants certainly could have a vested interest.
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson gave the team’s front office an ultimatum recently that he wants a new contract completed by April 15 — the first day of the offseason workout program — or he will suspend negotiations.
Wilson’s camp has told Seattle brass they won’t sign a long-term deal at all — not soon, not later — if it isn’t done by Monday at midnight, according to Peter King’s Football Monday in America. That would mean Wilson, who would be a free agent after this season, would be facing a franchise tag (and probably two of them), which he reportedly would accept.
Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, has been in Seattle since Friday to meet with the team and the sides continued to work on an extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The 30-year-old Wilson, who has one year at a cap hit of $25.3 million remaining on his contract, is expected to report for Monday’s workout.
Longtime NFC West adversary Tyrann Mathieu, who left Arizona as a free agent this offseason to sign with Kansas City, claimed Sunday to have some inside information on Wilson’s plans.
“Russ wants New York,” Honey Badger tweeted Sunday. “But you ain’t heard that from T.”
The Giants might address their need for a successor to Eli Manning in next week’s draft, but Wilson’s evolving situation adds an intriguing trade possibility.
Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd has speculated that Wilson’s wife — pop singer Ciara — believes that a shift to New York would help her career.
Wilson has been in spring training with the Yankees for the past two seasons. He told reporters during camp last month that he loves Seattle, but “as far as trades or being moved, you can never be surprised.”
