THE Texas Open is the warm up for the 2021 Masters this week on the PGA Tour.
And while the field isn’t overly strong there are still some big names – including one Jordan Spieth – pitching up to get in the groove.
Spieth leads Tony Finau and Scottie Scheffler as the tournament favourite while Hideki Matsuyama is also teeing up.
Dustin Johnson had been in the field but has withdrawn as he looks to defend his Green Jacket at Augusta the following week.
And SunSport golf tipster David Facey,who picked 70/1 Billy Horschel in the WGC last week, is on hand for the tips this week.
Tips for Texas open
Hot shot – Correy Conners, 22-1
Defending champion this week, although his win came two years ago as the 2020 event was cancelled during the coronavirus shutdown. But he was on fire that week, shooting 66-66 at the weekend to finish 20 under par.
He never got going at the World Match Play, but plenty to like about the Canadian’s two previous starts – seventh at the Players Championship and third in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. This weeks’ field is nowhere near as strong as those two.
Mid price – Charley Hoffman, 33-1.
Finished runner-up to Conners in 2019 to underline just how much he loves this event – won in 2016 and also boasts another second place and a third, and has never missed the cut in ten starts at San Antonio.
Final round flop at Corales last week was a worry, but otherwise his recent form is pretty solid. He was top 20 at Sawgrass, top ten at Bay Hill, and finished in a share of seventh at the Genesis Invitational.
Long shot – Sam Ryder, 80-1
He was a strong fancy to qain his first PGA Tour title at the Corales last week, and shot the best final round of anyone in the top 12 with a 67 – but came up just a shot shy of Joel Dahmen.
That still confirmed the favourable impression he made when finishing eighth at the much hotter Honda Classic.
Still think he will make the breakthrough this year, and this is another good opportunity.
