    That's all from Group E

No twists and turns in Group E this evening I am afraid because how the day started, is how it ended.

It looked a relatively steep hill for Algeria to climb in the first place but once Franck Kessie scored the opening goal for Ivory Coast inside 25 minutes, it was always heading one way.

Algeria played poor and when Riyad Mahrez missed from the penalty spot, it summed up their tournament let alone the match.

As for Equatorial Guinea, they did well to not only off hold Sierra Leone but to go and actually win the game is very impressive. Gambia will have their hands full in the round of 16.

Thank you for tuning in today SunSport family, it has been a pleasure and I hope you all enjoy the rest of the day!

    Wasn't part of the algorithim

So the 2019 AFCON champions Algeria go crashing out in total utter embarrassment.

Before the tournament began, many had the Greens jotted down as one of the favourites and expected Algeria to be battling it out with Ivory Coast for who will finish top of Group E.

Having scored only one goal and securing just the one point on the board, Djamel Belamdi's men have fallen at the first hurdle.

One happy man will be Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola because it means that he can be re-united with star winger Riyad Mahrez earlier than he thought.

    They are no guinea pigs

Equatorial Guinea didn't just scrape into the round of 16 but they comfortably progressed as runners up with two wins out of three which is a sublime effort from them.

The 114th ranked footballing team in the world showed heart and fight to firstly end Algeria's unbeaten run and then to follow it up with a victory over Sierra Leone who would have been on a high from their 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast.

This is only the third time the National Thunder have qualified for AFCON where surprisingly, they have never exited earlier than the quarter-finals.

In 2012 it was the quarter-finals and in 2015 it was the semi-finals, they failed to qualify in 2019 but can the Central African country reach the final in 2022?

    Man of the Match

If you have been following the blog, there is no guesses as to who this award has gone to.

Arsenal's record signing Nicolas Pepe has had an outstanding tournament so far and he epitomised that with a scintillating display this evening.

The Ivorian looked threatening to Algeria's backline everytime he broke forward, they simply couldn't handle him.

In addition to that, not only did he provide an assist for the opening strike but he also capped off the performance with the goal of the game.

    How Group E has concluded

Confirmation of how Algeria exit the competition bottom of the group and the Elephants go marching on.

    Pulled out of the hat

So with Ivory Coast topping Group E it means that they will go head-to-head with the most decorated nation in AFCON history, Egypt.

That is a game fit for a final let alone the round of 16.

As for Equatorial Guinea, because they finished second in Group E, the National Thunder will take on winners of Group F, Gambia.

Full time – Sierra Leone 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

    Wow what a story!

The National Thunder have rained on Sierra Leone and Algeria's parade bygrabbing that second automatic qualifying spot and sending the rest packing.

    How far can they go?

  • Nyle Smith

    Sierra Leone 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

90+1. Following a reckless challenge on Maarouf Eid Mansour by Kwame Quee, the Sierra Leone attacker has received his second yellow and has been sent for an early bath.

That should be enough now to see the National Thunder finish in second spot.

  • Nyle Smith

Red Card! – Kwame Quee is off!

  • Nyle Smith

    Sierra Leone 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

    86. It seems as if everyone is allergic to scoring penalties this evening as Ansu Kamara has squandered the opportunity for the Leone Stars to draw level with Equatorial Guinea.

    How costly could that be?

  • Nyle Smith

Kei Ansu Kamara has missed it!

  • Nyle Smith

    Penalty to Sierra Leone!

Full time – Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria

Ivory Coast have proven this evening why they are one of the favourites to win this competition having brushed aside the holders and finishing top of the group.

As for Algeria, it is back to the drawing board and this will be one of the AFCON's that they will want to forget in a hurry.

  • Nyle Smith

    Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria

90+3. Sebastien Haller was unable to hold his run which is such a shame because it really was a wonderful header to go with some beautiful celebrations.

That has spared the reigning champions' blushes a little.

  • Nyle Smith

Oh no! It has been chalked off!

  • Nyle Smith

Goal! – That is the icing on the cake!

Sebastien Haller finally gets his name on the scoresheet with a fine header and he has thoroughly deserved that for all of his good hold up play.

    There was no stopping that.

    Ivory Coast 4-1 Algeria

  • Nyle Smith

    Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria

90+1. Neither side can string a couple of passes together because they have left everything out there but in Algeria's case, everything is far from enough.

The Ivorian's are a couple of minutes away from topping the group and it looks as if they were face Egypt in the round of 16.

    Three minutes of added time

    Battling until the very end

Sierra Leone are still doing their best to grab an equaliser which could send them through as a best third-placed team but Equatorial Guinea are not letting up.

  • Nyle Smith

    Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria

    84. And that was Pepe's last action of the game as Patrice Beaumelle's decide to give the Arsenal winger a rest.

He was easily man of the match in my books.

    • Wilfried Zaha – ON
    • Nicolas Pepe – OFF

Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria – tamed effort Gradel!

    83. Somebody count how many times I have mentioned this mans name this evening but Nicolas Pepe yet again ran the length of the pitch before sliding the ball to Max Gradel.

And just as it looked as if the winger was going to bend his effort and grab Ivory Coasts' fourth, the strike barely tested the keeper.

    • Nyle Smith

      A sof goal to concede

Algerian attacker Sofiane Bendebka hoping to inject to belief in the Algerian national team with a delicate header from a couple yards out.

    • Nyle Smith

Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria – that is the save of the tournament!

      75. Riyad Mahrez swung in an excellent cross which Islam Slimani through himself at.

But somehow, Bandra Ali Sangare flew across the goal to deny the Lyon attacker from grabbing Algeria's second in quick succession.

I'm pretty sure the keeper grew wings because that was an unbelievable save.

    • Nyle Smith

Goal! – Well we could be in for a grandslam finish here!

Substitute Sofiane Bendekba nods in Algeria's first goal of the competition following some fantastic build-up play.

      Algeria are going down fighting.

      Ivory Coast 3-1 Algeria

    • Nyle Smith

      Ivory Coast 3-0 Algeria

      70. That was such a waste of a free-kick.

Poor from Pepe after all of that.
