Liverpool interest in Italian wonderkid Sandro Tonali confirmed by chairman

The former Leeds chief has revealed the Reds have contacted him regarding a potential move for the midfielder.

Tonali, 18, has been turning heads in recent months with his mature displays.

The defensive midfielder was even called up to Italy's senior squad by Roberto Mancini for the first time in November.

Now, reports in Italy say Liverpool are desperate to bolster their midfield ranks with a move this month.

Recently, Cellino revealed he wouldn't simply sell Tonali to the highest bidder, but to the club that's right for the player.

Chelsea have also revealed their interest in the playmaker, dubbed the "next Andrea Pirlo".

The Blues are said to be willing to pay £17million for the Serie B star – and would replace the now-departed Cesc Fabregas.

Last year, Tonali revealed he was an AC Milan fan, but would be willing to continue his career outside of Italy.

He said: “I was inspired by Pirlo. My idol is Gattuso. I can play in front of the defence. I want to win, in Italy or abroad. Who was I a fan of as a child? Milan.”
