Liverpool on red alert as target Julian Brandt available for just £22m

Bayer Leverkusen's Brandt, who has eight assists this season, was among Jurgen Klopp's top targets at Anfield two years ago.

But the Bremen-born 22-year-old opted against a move to a bigger club in the year before a World Cup.

Yet, German newspaper Bild say Brandt is now available for the cut-price of £22m.

Liverpool are likely to face competition from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for Brandt's signature in the summer.

But the Merseyside club's interest in him two years ago is likely to help their pursuit.

Brandt told Kicker in 2017: "My gut feeling and my head are telling me the time to move has not arrived yet. I have to straighten things out in Leverkusen.

"Of course there are players who say a year without European football before the World Cup is good reason to move.

"But if you move to a bigger club a year before the World Cup, you risk taking time at first to settle which possibly means playing fewer games."

Liverpool, meanwhile, need to win the Merseyside derby today in order to return to the top of the Premier League.

Man City's 1-0 win at Bournemouth yesterday took Pep Guardiola's side two points ahead.
