Man City looking to land Groningen's Japanese starlet Ritsu Doan in January

The Groningen playmaker, 20, has been on the Citizens' radar for some time after starring in the Eredivisie last season.

And The Mirror claims City are considering a £5million winter deal, although the Dutch club are not ready to sell.

Pep Guardiola would face competition for Doan, who moved to Europe from Gamba Osaka in his homeland in 2017.

The attacking midfielder has already made an impression in Holland – playing 34 times and scoring 10 in the process.

Doan's form earned him a first senior international call-up this year and he has one goal in three caps.

Juventus and Atletico Madrid are believed to be among the other clubs with ambitions to sign the potential superstar.

Douan has been nominated alongside Kylian Mbappe for the first ever Kopa trophy – awarded to talented youngsters.

The winner of the award will be decided by previous Ballon d'Or winners including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The official Ballon d'Or Twitter page announced the 10 nominees for the award – which will crown the best young player of 2018.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Houssem Aouar, Patrick Cutrone, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Amadou Haidara, Justin Kluivert, Christian Pulisic and Rodrygo were also named.
