Manchester United close in on £40m Premier League defender

Manchester United are reportedly confident of completing the signing of Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham this summer.

The Belgian defender has only a year left on his contract and is expected to be available for £40million.

Tottenham would then use the money to fund their own move for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, reports the Evening Standard .

Alderweireld has been offered a new deal at Tottenham but is believed to be unhappy with the terms.

That is despite being offered a salary of £120,000, more than double that he earns now.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the defender but United hope to have stolen a march.

Manager Jose Mourinho has long since identified his back-line as an area ripe for improvement this summer.
