Manchester United have still NOT made Toby Alderweireld bid as Tottenham hopes of Anthony Martial deal fade

United have been chasing the Tottenham star for the past six months as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a top class defender this summer.

And despite Alderweireld making it clear to Spurs that he has no intention signing a new deal, the North London club have yet to receive any formal bid for his services.

With the transfer window closing at 5pm tomorrow, that leaves United cutting it fine if they want to strike any kind of deal with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

And it throws into doubt whether Mourinho will try to mount a last-ditch bid up to £60million, of if he has turned his attentions elsewhere having given up hope of getting his man.

England star Harry Maguire is one option, and with Leicester set to sign TWO centre-backs in the next 24 hours he has emerged as a serious candidate to make the switch to Old Trafford.

There had been claims United were ready to offer unsettled forward Anthony Martial as part of a package to get the Alderweireld deal over the line.

But SunSport understands there is little appetite for that from Spurs, whose initial interest in the Frenchman now appears to have cooled.

Instead Mauricio Pochettino appears to be pushing ahead with his bid to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, despite the Championship club insisting they are not prepared to sell.

That would leave Martial facing the prospect of missing out on the chance to join another Premier League club, despite wanting to remain in England if he left United.

The 22-year-old has endured a difficult relationship with boss Mourinho over the past year and looks a long way out of the first team picture.

United hinted during their tour of America that they would be open to the prospect of selling Martial this summer, but only to a side abroad.

And that is becoming increasingly like the only option available to the forward, with the deadline on all other countries now shutting until the end of the month.
