Melbourne Storm regain Tim Glasby, name Brandon Smith at hooker

Melbourne Storm have named State of Origin prop Tim Glasby to make his return from thumb surgery against Manly at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

Glasby fractured his thumb in the Storm’s Anzac night win over New Zealand, had surgery the next day and was feared to miss a month of action.

But he has made good time in his recovery and was observed completing strenuous training drills last week setting up for his return.

Glasby’s inclusion will be a boost to the Storm who have lost captain Cameron Smith and prop Sam Kasiano to suspension for the Sea Eagles game with Glasby named on the bench in place of Kasiano.

The Storm will likely use a Smith by another name at hooker with New Zealand international Brandon Smith moving into the starting No.9 jumper.

The Storm also swung a surprise naming utility back Jahrome Hughes on the bench, it’s uncertain if Hughes is capable of playing hooker but he has successfully played at full-back and five-eighth in the past.

This could mean Cameron Munster spends time at hooker with Hughes at five-eighth or he could be cover if another back is struggling with soreness.

Utility forward Joe Stimson is also on the bench and he has played some minutes at hooker in the past, so he could share minutes with Brandon Smith if needed.

In the past when Cameron Smith has been out, Storm coach Craig Bellamy has used two players at hooker over the 80 minutes.

Storm half-back Ryley Jacks was also named in the side despite leaving the field in last week’s 28-14 win over Gold Coast after failing a concussion test.

Storm centre Will Chambers said on Monday Jacks told teammates he was feeling fine after the Titans game so he was expected to take his place in the side.

The Sea Eagles are poised to bring mid-season signing Trent Hodkinson straight into their side with the past New South Wales half-back named on the bench.

The Storm host the Sea Eagles at AAMI Park on Saturday at 7.35pm.
