The Dutchman flopped at Manchester United, but has recently revealed he is interested in returning to the Premier League – mentioning Chelsea as a potential destination.
Depay scored just seven goals in 53 games for the Red Devils and left Old Trafford after two unsuccessful seasons in 2017.
But the 25-year-old forward seemed to have rejuvenated his career at Lyon as he netted 16 Ligue 1 goals and assisted in 14 for the French outfit in 2018.
However, he has failed to find the net since November when he made headlines with a stunning Beckham-like goal from a free-kick in a game against Guingamp.
And Lyon president Aulas had none of it when Depay missed a penalty in an embarrassing 2-0 loss to strugglers Monaco on Sunday, slamming his stars for being pre-occupied with big-money summer transfers.
He wrote on Twitter: "Some players are far below their potential.
"Those who think they can make big transfers at the end of the year are wrong, they must talk less and give much more."
Despite drawing with Barcelona in the Champions League last week, Lyon have only won one of their four last games and are now just three points ahead of fourth-placed St-Etienne.
Depay has recently revealed he wants to move to a bigger club than Lyon and considers moving back to England – mentioning Chelsea as a potential next step in his career.
He said: "Lyon is a big club, but not one of the five best in Europe.
"I want to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich."
But rather than proving himself worthy on the pitch, Depay instead sparks controversy channelling his inner Eminem in botched attempts at rapping.
Although he has scored six goals this season and assisted in 13 in all competitions.
