Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez insists contract stalemate is not to blame for disastrous start to season

The Toon boss is into the last year of his deal and refused to sign fresh terms in the summer.

Uncertainty over Benitez’s future has coincided with Newcastle losing four of their first five games in all competitions this season.

But the Spaniard said: “It would not change anything.

“We’ll have plenty of time to talk about my future but it is not about my future in the next few months, it has to be about the team.

“The main thing now is to get the maximum we can from our players.

“We just have to think about games and improving the team and see what happens later on.

“I am quite relaxed because I am happy here.

“Hopefully we can do the right things here and it will be easier for us to make a decision.”
