Newcastle next manager odds: Howe favourite for Toon job, Hughes enters frame, Villas-Boas, Silva & Barton in contention

EDDIE HOWE is the leading contender to be appointed Newcastle's next permanent manager.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've installed the former Bournemouth boss as the 7/2 favourite to replace Steve Bruce at St. James' Park.

Howe, 43, has been a free agent since leaving the Vitality Stadium in August and his attacking approach could prove popular on Tyneside.

Rafa Benitez is second in the betting market at 4/1.

The 63-year-old guided Newcastle to the Championship title and secured a 10th and two 13th-placed finishes before leaving to join Dalian Yifang in July 2019.

However, Rafa's return looks unlikely given his fractured relationship with owner Mike Ashley.

Benitez is joined at 4/1 by new candidate Mark Hughes, who was sacked by Southampton after eight months in charge back in December 2018.

The former Wales boss says he has renewed energy and enthusiasm and is ready to get back into football management.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I've had enough rest now – I'm ready to go.

"Those opportunities will keep on coming, you'd like to think, given the CV that I've got. You just have to wait for the right one."

Swansea manager Steve Cooper and Toon icon Alan Shearer are next, priced at 6/1 and 15/2 respectively.

Laurent Blanc is slightly further back at 10s.

The Frenchman, now in charge at Qatari club Al-Rayyan, won the Ligue 1 title with Bordeaux during the 2008-09 season and helped PSG to three-consecutive championships.

Marseille's Andre Villas-Boas is 14/1 having reportedly rejected the opportunity to manage Newcastle earlier this year.

Betfair have also added former Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton and Marco Silva to their list of potential candidates at 14/1 and 16/1 respectively.

Bruce himself became the new outright favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post.

The struggling Toon were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Arsenal last night thanks to goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka.

The defeat stretched their winless run to 11 games in all competitions, with just one goal in nearly 12 hours of football.

Betfair Spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "Following last night’s defeat, Newcastle have now won just one game in their last ten in all competitions and things are heating up for Steve Bruce, as he is now the favourite in the betting to be the next Premier League manage to leave their post.

"Just one month ago he was 20/1 to be sacked, however their form has gone rapidly downhill since then and he is now 6/5 to go."
