One Knicks assistant may survive coaching turnover
CHICAGO — David Fizdale may retain at least one of Jeff Hornacek’s assistants — Howard Eisley.
Eisley is part of the Knicks’ contingent in Chicago at the draft combine. Eisley also was on the list of top African-American assistant coaches that Fizdale compiled for The Undefeated. Eisley was a teammate of Hornacek’s with the Jazz.
When Hornacek and associate coach Kurt Rambis were fired at the Westchester Airport after landing from Cleveland in the wee hours of April 12, Hornacek’s other assistants — Jerry Sichting, Corey Gaines, Eisley and David Bliss — were kept on until further notice There could be a scenario in which Bliss is also kept, since he was a Kristaps Porzingis favorite.
The Post has reported Fizdale is expected to hire Keith Smart, his Memphis assistant with whom he also worked in Miami.
Nevertheless, Nick Van Exel, who was considered a candidate, is not coming to New York and is expected to remain in Memphis with J.B. Bickerstaff, who replaced Fizdale and had the interim tag removed.
In a Twitter message, Van Exel responded to a fan’s question whether he’d be joining the Knicks. “Nah,’’ Van Exel, a former top-shelf point guard, replied.
Ex-Knicks head coach Mike Woodson is a free agent after his contract wasn’t renewed by the Clippers and employed Fizdale on his staff in Atlanta from 2004-08. In interviews this week, Fizdale has credited Woodson with teaching him attention to detail.
Fizdale left draft interviews early to meet with Enes Kanter in Chicago.
