Rangers boss Steven Gerrard battling Leeds United for defender

Steven Gerrard is battling Leeds for Swansea’s wantaway defender Kyle Bartley.

Bartley, 26, has told Swansea he wants to leave and Gerrard would like the centre-half to move north to join him at Rangers.

Bartley, who made just five Premier League appearances last season, enjoyed a successful loan spell at Elland Road in 2016-17 and Leeds are keen to re-sign him on a permanent deal.

He signed a four-year deal at the Liberty Stadium last summer and Swansea value him at £6million.

Leeds are confident they can beat Rangers to land Bartley for around £4million.

Meanwhile, Leeds have been put on alert after goalkeeper David Stockdale was told he can leave Birmingham.

Stockdale, 32, joined on a free last season from Brighton, penning a three-year contract, and Leeds want to sign an experienced goalkeeper to challenge Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
