Real Madrid to make fresh push for Chelsea star as Blues’ unease grows
Real Madrid are ready to use Chelsea’s unease over Thibaut Courtois’ contract situation to take him to Spain this summer.
Courtois declared back in March that he would still be at Chelsea next season, but a £200,000-a-week new contract has yet to be signed.
With Chelsea having failed to secure Champions League football and Antonio Conte looking increasingly likely to depart, there is uncertainty swirling around Stamford Bridge.
Courtois is about to enter the final 12 months of his deal, with prolonged talks having come to little.
And amid suggestions that he could look to run down his contract and walk away on a free transfer in 2019, Madrid may look to snare the Belgian international this summer.
Madrid boss Florentino Perez remains keen to replace Keylor Navas, despite the Costa Rican having played a key role in a third successive run to the Champions League final.
Perez has never been convinced by Navas, while the issue is further heightened with No.2 Kiko Casilla likely to leave this summer.
David de Gea is unlikely to leave Manchester United – who would also ask for in excess of £100million – and Courtois is seen as the best alternative.
A move to the Santiago Bernabeu would appeal to him on a personal level. with Courtois having spoken regularly of his desire to return to the city, where his former partner, Marta Dominguez, lives with his young son, Nicolas, and daughter, Adriana.
The Chelsea stopper returns to the Spanish capital – where he spent three highly-successful years on loan with Atletico – at every available opportunity.
In February he stated: "If Real are really interested, then my personal situation would be key, yes. The family aspect, it is priceless."
