Roman Reigns shocked the world of wrestling with the heart-breaking news he is battling leukemia.
His emotional speech on Monday Night Raw saw him relinquish the Universal Championship – and that gave WWE a small problem.
The 33-year-old, real name Joe Anoa’i was due to be fighting Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman in a triple threat match at the upcoming Crown Jewel event.
While that bill in Saudi Arabia has been shrouded in controversy after the unexplained disappearance of a journalist from the country – it appears WWE are sure the match ups will go ahead.
After Reigns’ delivered his news, the company moved to announce that it would be a straight fight between Lesnar and Strauman for the title.
No mention of Reigns’ condition was given in the announcement, just that the Universal Championship belt was now vacant.
And while many fans were still reeling from the news from Roman Reigns, they are still looking forward to the new slimmed down match up.
But not everyone was so positive, one fan wrote: "Feels like the wrong time to criticise booking; but also this is the least creative way they could have approached this.
"Also do you really want title change in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the record books when holding the event there at this time is such a shameful move."
On Raw Strowman stated that Reigns would be first in line for a title shot when he makes his return, but was attacked by Drew McIntyre before he could approach Paul Heyman and send a message to Lesnar.
On Raw, Reigns said: "I’ve been living with leukemia for 11 years, and unfortunately it’s back… I’m going to have to relinquish the Universal Championship."
"It’s a lie because the reality is, my real name is Joe and I’ve been living with leukemia for 11 years and unfortunately it’s back.
"And because the leukemia is back i cannot fulfil my role, I can’t be that fighting champion and I’m going to have to relinquish my Universal Championship"
"I’m not going to lie, I’ll take every prayer you can send my way, but I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m not looking for you to feel bad for me because I have faith."
