Rey Mysterio is returning to WWE for the 1000th episode of SmackDown

WWE legend Rey Mysterio is returning to action for the 1000th episode of SmackDown.

The American company has already confirmed Batista will be in Washington D.C. for SmackDown 1000 on Tuesday, October 16.

The faction Evolution will reunite, with ‘The Animal’ joining Triple H, Randy Orton and Ric Flair for one night only at the historic event.

Now the greatest cruiserweight of all time is also joining the party – after signing a new two-year deal with WWE earlier this year.

The 43-year-old high flyer exclusively revealed to Mirror Sport earlier this year that he was looking for a permanent comeback.

Today WWE announced: "SmackDown 1000 now has another number of significance attached to it. That number is 619, because Rey Mysterio is back!

"The SmackDown legend will appear on the history-making episode, marking his return to the blue brand for the first time in more than four years.

"The former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion is best remembered for energising SmackDown with his signature aerial attack, unbelievable athleticism and never-say-die attitude.

"Mysterio was a cornerstone of Team Blue since the first brand split in March 2002 and helped define the SmackDown spirit.

"What impact will The Biggest Little Man have when he makes his triumphant return to the brand he helped build?"

The lucha libre icon made a one-off appearance with the company at this year’s Royal Rumble in January and has since fulfilled WWE media duties.

Fans remarked that the 5ft 6in star looked better than ever with a ripped physique and the ability to still pull off some incredible acrobatics between the ropes.

During his time away he has been a hit across the world and led a team of Fenix and Bandido at the biggest US independent wrestling show ever, All-In, last month.

The Mexican-American’s WWE career is the stuff of legend, having wowed with WCW in the 1990s, before he joined Vince McMahon’s company in 2002.

The pioneer transcended his size and went on to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2006, having previously clinched the Royal Rumble.
