Spurs and Man City after £6m Black Cats star

Jack Ross is confident Sunderland can keep teenage strike sensation Josh Maja for their promotion bid this season.

The youngster is the hottest property in League One after taking his tally to 11 already this season. His current form is giving the club a medium term headache with Bristol City interested in a January deal, and Spurs , Manchester City and Southampton monitoring his situation.

The 19-year-old’s deal ends in the summer. Boss Ross would love him to stay and sign long term, but talks have been going on a while and he has confirmed: "There is no update."

If Sunderland can’t tie him down soon, a £6m bid might be too good to turn down in January.

But Ross said: "He will be here minimum until January. I would expect him to be here longer than that. I am confident of that. "I know he is enjoying it. He is playing and contributing. He is only young. To get 11 goals so far, he deserves huge credit."

Ross reckons Maja might not get a better club to learn and achieve than Sunderland on the way back to the second tier.

He added: "He is level-headed. He trusts he will get better here under our management. I believe we can improve him. There are not many better clubs than this. There are so many other things to consider.

"You have a feel for him as a personality and a man. He is polite and humble. I have not hint of him being distracted. He has built a good relationship with me and my staff. His ability to hit the back of the net, even when the chances are not easy, is excellent."
