Stoke City 0-3 Leeds United: Championship leaders pile more pressure on Nathan Jones

Championship leaders Leeds United continued their unbeaten start to the season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side inflicted another defeat on bottom club Stoke City.

Stuart Dallas latched on to a through ball from Pablo Hernandez to finish off a fine team move and give the Whites the lead three minutes before the break at the Bet365 Stadium.

The visitors doubled their advantage five minutes after the restart when Patrick Bamford squared to give Ezgjan Alioski a tap-in from close range, and Bamford lashed in a third after Stoke goalkeeper Adam Federici palmed an Alioski shot into his path.

Stoke had no response to Leeds’ dominance and the Potters have now taken just one point from their opening five games of the campaign.

  • Relive Saturday’s EFL action

England goalkeeper Jack Butland was dropped by Stoke boss Nathan Jones, who made six changes to the side beaten at Preston in midweek and handed the captain’s armband to 18-year-old defender Nathan Collins.

Butland’s replacement Federici saved well from Hernandez early on but the hosts could do little to stem the flow of Leeds attacks and the visitors were ahead through right-back Dallas following some quick one-touch football.

Liam Lindsay had a header pushed away by visiting keeper Kiko Casilla after the break but Macedonia international Alioski gave Leeds a two-goal cushion when he finished off another move started by Hernandez.

Leeds lost in the play-off semi-finals last season having missed out on automatic promotion, but Bielsa’s men look set to challenge at the top of the table again after starting with four wins and a draw – scoring 10 goals in the process and conceding just twice.

After seeing Bamford net his fourth goal of the season Stoke eventually had their first effort on target in the 76th minute through Tom Ince, who saw his low effort from range saved by Casilla.

Federici kept the score down by saving from Helder Costa and Adam Forshaw but it proved to be another difficult afternoon for Stoke, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2017-18 and finished 16th last season.

The Potters are now winless in 11 league games stretching back to April and Jones has won just four of his 27 games in all competitions since taking charge in January.
