Tom Cruise is training the next generation in new ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ sequel trailer

Tom Cruise, 57, is back as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a new “Top Gun: Maverick” trailer that shows him as a flight instructor training a new generation of pilots.

In the sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun,” fans meet new characters played by Miles Teller (as Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased Radar Intercept Officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw), Glen Powell and “Chicago Justice” star Monica Barbaro (as the franchise’s first female pilot).

“Your instructor is one of the finest pilots this program has ever produced,” an unidentified voice tells the new recruits. “His exploits are legendary. What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death.”

The sequel is also set to feature Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and “The Good Place” star Manny Jacinto in undisclosed roles, along with Val Kilmer, reprising his part as Maverick’s nemesis, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

“Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it,” the trailer description reads.

“Top Gun: Maverick” takes off in theaters June 26, 2020, just over 34 years after the original “Top Gun” premiered.
