Tyson Fury reveals Deontay Wilder fat jibe lured him back into boxing and away from canal jump
The Gypsy King will have been out of the ring for two-years-and-seven-months when he finally makes his tune-up comeback in Manchester on June 9.
And it could have been very different after the 29-year-old revealed a jibe over his weight almost sent him over the edge.
After ballooning up to 25 stone during his depression-riddle absence, Fury was set to walk away from the sport but a verbal shot from the Bronze Bomber set him back on the hunt for gold.
Fury said: “I am finally back in shape and have set a date – it was Deontay Wilder who spurred me on because he said I could not do it he said I was finished. I wanted to prove him wrong.
“I was walking my dog along the canal and when I heard that I looked at myself and thought ‘you fat pig’ I felt like jumping in and drowning myself.
“But I am in a very good place and a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter I feel fully focuses, sharp and strong and fast. The two years out helped me, I never had a break since starting as a child.
“I had much needed time with my family and have my head working again.”
NICE LITTLE HEARNER Deontay Wilder offers Anthony Joshua £35MILLION to fight him next
After two or three warm-up fighter, Fury and promoter Frank Warren insist the 25-0 star can challenge for titles again.
Anthony Joshua holds the WBA, IBF and WBO belts and is trying to tie down a date with WBO boss Wilder who claims to have made a £35million offer.
The winner will become the first undisputed heavyweight king since Lennox Lewis but Fury claims he could beat either man minus a limb.
After overcoming his mental health battle, he said: “I don’t fear anyone, they are all good champions but I believe I could tie either hand behind my back and beat both of them.
“I had a lot of money and it didn’t make me happy – being active and content and having something to live for makes you happy.
“I want to inspire people with mental health problems – my goal is to get back and dance under the lights. Everything is going very well.”
