Was ABC’s ‘Bachelor’ pick a mistake?
The new star of the upcoming season of The Bachelor was revealed Tuesday on Good Morning America, and ABC’s polarizing choice triggered protest campaigns on social media.
Colton Underwood, a contestant on the most recent season of The Bachelorette and Bachelor In Paradise, will be the next Bachelor. The announcement came just one day after his breakup with Tia Booth aired on Bachelor In Paradise.
So excited and grateful for a new adventure… It’s time to find a wife!
Was Colton the right choice to be the next Bachelor, or did ABC overlook a better selection?
The answer depends on your perspective. There are already countless angry fans who have vowed to ignore another season of Colton. After his long run on The Bachelorette and his heavily featured love story with Tia – they dominated several episodes of Bachelor In Paradise – the Colton fatigue is real.
Bachelor: who do you want to be the next bachelor?
Bachelor: oh Colton
Everyone: literally anyone bu-
Bachelor: it’s Colton
On the other side, there are many who view Colton as an ideal selection for the role. After several of the cast members from Becca’s season were revealed to be problematic, to say the least, Colton at least seems like a safe choice.
PLEASE TELL ME WHY everyone is upset that Colton is the new bachelor? He respects women, has a charity that helps kids, and loves dogs. What more could you want?? #TheBachelor
The biggest question surrounding Colton is whether or not he’s ready to embark on a ridiculous reality show journey in which he’ll date roughly 25 women simultaneously. To be fair, is anyone ready for that?
Simply looking at the timeline of past show production, filming for the upcoming season of The Bachelor should begin in September, which means Colton will be around two or three months removed from his breakup with Tia. After ending that relationship, Tia encouraged Colton to “focus on this time and really figuring yourself out, so you can fully give yourself to someone.” He’s already on the clock.
Colton has a reputation for being indecisive and emotional, and it’s easy to envision a scenario in which a number of women end up with broken hearts because he can’t decide what he wants. Just look at the way the reunion with Tia played out on Bachelor In Paradise. Upon arrival, Colton wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to date Tia, and considered keeping his options open with other women. He only avoided elimination thanks to a sympathy rose from Bibiana, and then had to endure a meeting with Becca, who he clearly hadn’t gotten over.
Following an emotional breakdown, Colton was on the verge of going home – but seemed like an entirely different person after having a conversation with Becca. By episode 5, Colton called Tia his girlfriend – only to reveal in episode 8 that he felt like his heart wasn’t in the relationship.
From the perspective of a producer, however, Colton seems like a perfect choice. It’s likely that many of the people swearing off The Bachelor are going to tune in and hate-watch Colton anyway, and his very public dating history gives the showrunners plenty of material to work with. With Colton, viewers will feel a familiarity with his story and personality. We’ve already seen that his relationships can quickly end in flames, and that should help drive ratings.
- Is a “safe” choice that also has a lot of trainwreck potential
- Producers get tons of previous storylines to draw from. A Tia or Becca appearance during the season seems guaranteed
- Has his own charity foundation
- Likes dogs, I guess
- Isn’t afraid to express emotion, but can sometimes go overboard
- Might not be a great communicator. Often had boring dates with Becca
- Extremely fickle
- Came off as angry and confrontational in the Men Tell All episode from The Bachelorette
- Has been overexposed over the last two seasons
- Has never been in a successful, enduring relationship
- Is going to have some super awkward fantasy suite dates
- Isn’t Blake or Jason
