England cruised to victory in the end, but they had a frustrating start to yesterday’s match against Iran after there was a long stoppage due to an injury to goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

They then went in search of an opener, and Jordan Pickford thought they had it when Harry Maguire produced a towering header from a corner. The Everton goalkeeper started celebrating, only for Maguire’s header to come back off the crossbar.

England made a winning start to the tournament on Monday as they thrashed Iran 6-2, while Wales fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against USA.

The build-up to both matches was overshadowed by a row over wearing the ‘One Love’ armband, though, with England and Wales, as well as five other European nations, backing down on wearing it after being threatened with ‘sporting sanctions’ by FIFA.
