Zinedine Zidane 'creating shortlist of stars he wants to sign' if asked to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

The Frenchman is being lined up to replace Jose Mourinho if his Old Trafford struggles continue, according to the Mirror.

It is understood Zidane has told friends he will expect a phone call from the United board if they choose to part ways with their current manager.

The former Real Madrid boss has already been tipped to make the switch to Manchester United following the club's recent turmoil.

And if he is brought in, he will have his shortlist ready to present to the club.

It is thought Real Madrid pair Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, currently on loan at Bayern Munich, make the cut.

Rodriguez's team-mate in Germany Thiago Alcantara as well as Edinson Cavani are also wanted by Zidane if he does take over.

But those players will not come in on the cheap and Zidane would need to twist the arm of the United board to part with hundreds of millions of pounds – which could prove a stumbling block.

Both Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insist their relationship is strong despite feuds over the summer transfer window and Woodward's unwillingness to spend cash.

Zidane is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League but is currently enjoying a sabbatical following his successful two-and-a-half year stint at Real Madrid.

He won three Champions League titles, one La Liga crown, two Uefa Super Cups and two Fifa Club World Cups after replacing Rafael Benitez in January 2016.

And Manchester United know it won't be long before the free agent gets snapped up by another team and will be keen to swoop before they miss their chance to get him.
