Aldi worker reveals secret way staff communicate most people won’t have noticed
Now the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket chain, Aldi is always seeking talented, hard-working individuals keen to pursue a career in retail.
Since opening its first British store in 1990, Aldi has grown in popularity and has 890 stores across the UK, employing more than 36,000 people. It aims to have 1,200 stores by 2025, and is looking to recruit some ambitious colleagues.

So what makes Aldi such a great company to work for? We quizzed store assistant Samantha, 22, who is based at its Harrogate store who revealed how she is thriving at Aldi after losing her job as cabin crew as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic – and let us in on a secret about how staff speak to each other…
When did you join Aldi, and what inspired you to apply?
I joined in June this year, after losing my job in cabin crew for an airline – Covid-19 has hit the travel industry so hard. I originally applied to Aldi looking for a temporary job, but after a couple of months I was offered a permanent role, thanks to my hard work and dedication. I soon noticed what a great team of people work here – everyone made me feel so welcome.
Was there a lot to learn?
I felt I had some transferable skills from my previous job, although working at Aldi is very different. On my first day, I was shown a video about how the store works, and the manager went through everything with me. Over the next two weeks, I was “buddied” with someone who showed me what to do. I was then given my own responsibilities and trusted to do a good job – while being supported by my colleagues of course!
What’s your current role?
As a store assistant, I have to ensure the supermarket is well stocked and that customers have a rewarding shopping experience.
What do you like best about your job?
The genuine opportunity for career progression. There’s a great team spirit too – we all wear headsets (seen above), so we’re constantly in touch, which creates real camaraderie.
What’s a typical day like?
First thing I usually stock the shelves in a certain part of the store. I also have to go on the tills from time to time; you need to scan items quickly to keep the queue moving. If I’m doing a late shift, I’ll replenish the shelves. I really enjoy how varied the work is.
Do you work a standard Monday-Friday week?
No, we work a shift system, and that’s something else I like. I always receive my rota with plenty of notice and usually do a five-day week, with the occasional Saturday or Sunday. I might do a 5am-1pm shift one day, or 12-8pm or 4pm-midnight on another day.
Are you well rewarded?
Definitely – Aldi is one of the best supermarket payers. Store assistants start on £9.40 (£10.90 in London), rising to £10.41 (£11.15 in London) depending on how long you’ve worked there.
What are the career prospects like for young people?
Very good. I’d love to become a store manager, and the great thing about Aldi is that if you work hard, you can achieve your career objectives. Long term, my dream is to be an area manager. You’ve got to aim high!
What skills do people need to succeed at Aldi?
You need to be enthusiastic and willing to learn, with good customer skills. The role is quite target driven, so anyone joining needs to be able to work to the achievable goals.
Does the Aldi culture make a difference?
Working for Aldi has given me a greater commercial awareness. The company also makes you aware of how you contribute to its overall success.
Are there any perks?
Yes, I’ve got the MyAldi internal app (seen above), which gives discounts on gym memberships, and various leisure and retail brands. That’s perfect for me as I’m trying to get a bit fitter after snacking too much during lockdown!
