American dancer, 22, doesn’t know legs have been amputated

Unconscious American dancer, 22, whose legs were amputated after Bahamas boat explosion DOESN’T KNOW she’s lost her limbs, relative reveals

  • Stefanie Schaffer of Vermont lost both of her legs after a deadly tour boat explosion in the Bahamas on Saturday
  • The 22-year-old dancer has been in a medically-induced coma at a Nassau hospital since the incident 
  • A relative told on Sunday that she doesn’t know yet that her legs have been removed
  • Meanwhile, the one victim of the incident has been identified as 39-year-old mother-of-one Maleka Jackson
  • Jackson was on an anniversary trip with her husband, Tiran, who is also hospitalized

A family member says the dancer who lost both of her legs in a Bahamas tour boat explosion doesn’t know that they’ve been amputated yet. 

A relative of 22-year-old Stefanie Schaffer spoke to Sunday night about the Saturday incident. 

The family member said Stefanie was a ‘very outgoing’ dancer who recently graduated from college.  

‘The scary thing is Stefanie doesn’t know that she’s lost her legs, and that’s what really upsets me,’ she said.

‘She’s going to wake up from this coma and realize “I don’t have any legs”. It’s breaking my heart.’

Stefanie continues to recover from her injuries in a hospital in the Bahamas because she is too critical to be moved. 

Nine others on board the boat were flown back to the U.S. for treatment, thanks to the Coast Guard.

In another moment from the clip, a man tries to stop the bleeding on his neck 

‘She’s in really critical care right now and in really serious shape,’ the relative said. ‘I know she has really bad internal injuries.’

The relative said Stefanie’s mother Stacey is also being treated in Nassaum after suffering multiple broken bones and internal injuries. 

Stefanie’s sister Brooke and stepfather Paul Bender  both managed to escape with only scratches and bruises.

Stefanie was described by the relative as a ‘very outgoing’ dancer who recently graduated from college

The others on board who were injured were Haiden Jones, his brother Kyle Ackerman, their mother Sheila Jones and their mother’s boyfriend John Inman. 

 Among the others injured in the blast was teen Haiden Jones, his brother Kyle Ackerman, his mother Sheila Jones, and her boyfriend John Inman, Haiden’s father said on Facebook.

One woman died – 39-year-old Maleka Jackson. The mother-of-one was on a anniversary trip with her husband Tiran, who a source told is in ‘bad shape’ at the hospital.

The company that ran the trip, 4C’s Adventures, declined to comment on the explosion to because they are under investigation.   

The group who were on the boat when the explosion happened were 10 Americans and two Bahamian crew members.  

A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched by the family to raise money for Stefanie and Stacey’s medical expenses. 

A tour boat carrying 10 Americans and two Bahamians exploded off the island of Exuma on Saturday. Four of the injured Americans were airlifted to Florida by the US Coastguard
