A family-run cafe in Merseyside has been crowned the ‘Best Takeaway in Britain’ after ditching the trappings of its traditional takeaway wrappings.
Brunch, founded by Sharon Carline in Preston, Merseyside had been ranked the best takeaway in the North West for three years in a row but this year made a step up to scoop the main gong at The British Takeaway Awards 2018.
The change that made the difference was Brunch’s decision to ditch plastics and become more environmentally friendly.
Out went single-use plastic such as straws, cutlery and problematic packaging and in came 100 per cent biodegradable cups and recyclable cartons.
Founder Sharon said: “We’re still in shock. I never thought we’d go the whole way and scoop the national award. It’s such a fantastic feeling to see your hard work and dedication recognised."
Across the country takeaways were recognised for their culinary excellence but there were also individual awards for the likes of 82-year-old Brian Loughans who, incredibly, wins the award for Best Delivery Driver in Britain.
Brian of Kipling’s Restaurant in Halifax, Yorkshire, is currently waiting to hear if he has secured the Guinness World Record for the oldest delivery driver in the UK.
The octogenarian, who began working as a delivery driver after his wife sadly passed away, was nominated by his colleagues for his dedication to the job.
He wears a shirt and tie to work everyday and has never missed a shift in three years.
His colleagues praised his ability to navigate the local streets without the aid of sat nav or any other modern technology.
Brian hobnobbed with the stars at the ceremony which was attended by host of celebrities including Spencer Matthews and Vogue Williams, Frankie and Wayne Bridge, Rachel Riley, Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo, Vick Hope, Chris Kamara and Lisa Faulkner
The Awards, which are in association with Just Eat, crowned the best takeaway in 12 UK regions, alongside the Best Takeaway Chef in Britain, Best Delivery Driver in Britain, and the Game Changer award which recognises a business that is shaking up the status quo.
While many takeaways impressed with their authentic flavours and standout customer service, an increasing number of winners were praised for tackling the challenge of reducing plastic waste to make their businesses more sustainable.
Casa Rosa in Birtley, Durham, winner of Best Takeaway North East, has worked with the local council to create a range of dishes which are 600 calories or less.
The award entries also highlighted takeaways providing more vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options than ever before, as restaurants adapt their menus to cater for customers’ ever changing needs.
In total, 16 coveted awards were be presented.
The Best Delivery Driver in Britain, Best Takeaway Chef in Britain, and the Best Takeaway in each of the 12 regions receives £1,000 and free sign up to Just Eat, or their sign-up fee returned if they are already a partner.
Brunch who won Best Takeaway in Britain received a further cheque for £5,000.
