British Airways passengers were forced to evacuate a flight from New York to London after the plane began leaking fuel on the runway.

The packed BA Flight 112 took more than five hours before it eventually departed from John F Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday night.

Passengers had to be flown on a different plane after the problem wasn’t able to be resolved.

‘Well that was an eventful flight coming back,’ passenger Alexis Karfopoulos wrote on Twitter.

‘We ended up evacuating via the jet bridge due to a fuel spill.’

He added: ‘Eventually left 5 hrs late on a different plane.’ 

‘Safety will always be our overriding priority,’ a BA spokesman told MailOnline.

‘Our crew ensured customers got off the aircraft quickly and safely while ground staff cleared up a small fuel spill.’
