Biden accused of trying to ‘out-Trump’ Trump in new coronavirus campaign ad
Joe Biden has been accused of trying to “out-Trump” President Trump after he released a tough-on-China campaign video, which backfired and upset the left flank of his base.
The ad, released over the weekend, paints the former veep as one of the first people to sound the alarm over the coronavirus as Trump continuously praised China, allowing COVID-19 to spread around the world.
“Trump rolled over for the Chinese. He took their word for it,” the clip says over dramatic footage of Chinese soldiers and Trump with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
While multiple countries have expressed concern over China’s shambolic response to the outbreak, Biden’s anti-Beijing commercial caused unrest among progressives who accused the former veep of fanning racial tensions, as first reported by Politico.
“Wow @JoeBiden. Already trying to out-Trump Trump,” wrote ACLU deputy legal director Cecillia Wang, describing the campaign ad as a “propaganda film.”
“This kind of fearmongering is causing violent attacks on Asian Americans,” she continued.
“If you are trying to reform your past history of racist policymaking, like your 1994 crime bill, you had better do some homework. This ain’t it,” she wrote.
As Biden tries to aggressively court progressives and supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, the ad seems to have backfired and repulsed socialists.
“I find this ad disturbingly xenophobic. What kind of America are we trying to build here?” wrote Oscar-nominated director and Sanders surrogate Josh Fox.
Socialist video producer Carlos Maza was more blunt, writing: “This sucks major ass.”
“F— this xenophobic trash and f— you, Joe Biden. Retire,” added political communications director Alexandra Halaby.
With the virus condemning Biden to his Delaware basement, the presidential candidate has been reduced to taking shots at the Trump administration’s response from home.
