Boy, 8, killed and man, woman and child seriously injured in car crash

An eight-year-old boy has been killed and three other people seriously injured in a crash near Belfast.

The young boy was pronounced dead at the scene after a silver Audi Q3 and a silver Ford Focus crashed in Banbridge, County Down yesterday.

A man, a woman and another child were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The road was closed following the incident at around 5.30pm and three ambulance crews as well as the Air Ambulance attended.

Carla Lockhart, from the Democratic Unionist Party, offered her condolences, describing the incident as "horrendous news" and urging parents to "hold your children tight tonight."

In a Facebook post, she said: "Devastating news for a family tonight following the death of a little boy in a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Banbridge.

"Just horrendous news my thoughts and prayers are with the family.

"Hold your children tight tonight and please please pray for this family as they experience this unbearable grief."

Inspector Gregory Beckett said: “The boy tragically died at the scene of the two vehicle collision which occurred at around 5.20pm on Saturday evening, involving a silver Audi Q3 and a silver Ford Focus.

"Three other people have been taken to hospital and are being treated for injuries which are described as serious.

"The road was closed for some time following the collision but has since re-opened.

"Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage to contact local officers in Lurgan or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 994 21/07/18.”
