Metropolitan Police officers were called around 2.30pm to Streatham High Road today and the victim was rushed to hospital.
Authorities are now carrying out tests to establish the nature of the liquid.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “Officers and London Ambulance Service attended the scene and a man – no further details – received treatment before being taken to a south London hospital as a precaution.
“He did not suffer any injuries as a result of the incident. Enquiries continue to confirm the nature of the liquid used.
“There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”
Lambeth Police have since been granted Section 60 stop and search powers in the surrounding area until 7am tomorrow morning.
