Brexiteer Iain Duncan-Smith warns that Britain could face ugly France-style riots if there is a second EU referendum

Senior Brexiteer Iain Duncan-Smith said campaigners for the People’s Vote “need their heads examining”.

He also urged them to “look across the channel”, adding: “We’re not that far away from that kind of process happening here”.

Anti-government protests in France have seen bitter clashes between yellow-vested protesters and riot police in the last three weeks, along with hundreds of arrests.

IDS told Radio 5Live: “There’s a very large chunk of people who would feel utterly betrayed and very angry and I just caution you”.

“You’ve got to be really careful, you can’t just go round abusing the public’s trust.”

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt issued a similar warning last week.

The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu also spoke of how a second referendum could spark “civil unrest and violence” on the streets of Britain.
