King Charles was reportedly instructed by Prince Harry to scale back on the lavish gift he hoped to give granddaughter Lilibet for her birthday.

The monarch had planned to give Lilibet the extravagant gift for her second birthday earlier this month – but was handed a 'warning' on what to purchase by Harry.

According to OK! Magazine, the demand from his second-born son was for something more modest.

A source said that Charles had "his aides looking at custom-made cubby houses, similar to what the queen and Princess Margaret had when they were girls."

The insider added: "He wants to give Lili something she will use and be hers.

“She’ll remember it forever – it’s going to be the ultimate surprise."

It's unclear whether the King heeded Harry's wishes or went all out for the youngster, who is seventh in line to the throne.

Royal family sources have remained tight-lipped about Lili's party.

It's been reported that her party took place at Harry and Meghan’s £16million Montecito home.

And despite the King's private plans for his granddaughter's birthday celebrations, he – alongside other senior royals – noticeably chose not to share a public birthday tribute on Twitter, as is usually the custom.

A royal source told OK! it was because they "don’t mark the birthdays of non-working members".

"They, of course, wish Lilibet a very happy birthday, but nothing will be put out on any channels," the insider claimed.

It marks a different policy to that of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who honoured her great-granddaughter with a Twitter post for her first birthday last June.

"Wishing Lilibet a very Happy 1st Birthday!" the Queen shared via her official social media account at the time.

However since then, the relationship between Harry and Meghan and his family has plunged to its lowest point yet following the release of their Netflix docu-series and his tell-all memoir, Spare.
