De Blasio edict may have emboldened NYC’s crackheads
More than a dozen druggies openly smoked crack in Washington Square Park early Tuesday, just days after Mayor Bill de Blasio said he wanted the NYPD to stop locking up people for puffing pot in public.
Some local residents suggested the mayor’s edict has emboldened crackheads.
A Greenwich Village man said he spotted the drug fiends getting the post-sunrise jolt while he walked his dog through the iconic park around 6:15 a.m. — and, “I even watched a police car roll by and just keep going.”
Another resident noted, “If there’s one drawback to getting rid of pot busts, it’s that cops might not bother investigating whether people are actually smoking pot or something much worse.
“From a distance, you can’t necessarily tell between a crack pipe and a marijuana pipe,” said graphic designer Sarah Kim, 23.
On Sunday, de Blasio said the city needed new drug policies because the state was likely to legalize weed.
