Death Row drug smuggler, 19, faces firing squad execution in Bali prison

A 19-year-old woman is on death row facing execution by firing squad after she was caught smuggling drugs.

Manuela Vitoria de Araujo Farias was apprehended by police attempting to carry three kilos of drugs into Indonesia.

The Brazilian national had packed the cocaine into her luggage as she flew into the island of Bali.

Farias was arrested after the cocaine was discovered at Bali International Airport.

The 19-year-old will face execution by firing squad if she is convicted of drug trafficking, under Indonesia’s tough anti-drug laws.

According to The Bali Times, lawyer Davi Lira da Silva claims that Farias was tricked into smuggling the drugs.

Farias claims she only visited the island after hearing of temples on where they pray for the sick.

The teenager's mother had recently suffered a stroke, and Farias says she was attempting to seek Buddhist prayers for a cure.

"They said that she could pray in the temples to ask for her mother's healing," the lawyer said.

The publication added that Police in Santa Catarina in Brazil has refused to discuss the status of the investigation into the alleged criminals that gave the teenage girl the drugs.

The Bali Times also alleges that the three kilos of cocaine in her luggage were not detected after passing through airports in Brazil and Qatar.

In other news, an Australian surfer and diving instructor narrowly avoided a death sentence after he was caught smuggling heroin into Bali.

Instead, Jeffery Walton, 52 served eight months in a rehabilitation facility following his arrest last September.

A judge accepted that the eight grams of heroin and 0.34 grams of methamphetamine were in his possession as a drug user, not a drug trafficker.
