Doctor ‘killed baby’ during birth by ‘getting three men to force out child’

A doctor is accusing of killing a baby by forcing a mum to undergo an “aggressive birth” when she needed a caesarean.

Dr Marina Sarmosyan was remanded in custody over one alleged case of a baby death.

She is also being held over three births when the newborn child suffered brain damage or serious injury.

Police detained the woman in handcuffs and led her away after the string of incidents at the hospital in Russia.

Police believe there are other similar cases at her Moscow clinic Number 27.

Cops have urged parents to come forward and lodge formal complaints over Dr Sarmosyan.

However, more than 8,000 people have signed a petition in support of the gynaecologist who has won awards for her work – set up by her daughter Tamara Marganyan.

“Caesareans were refused for women, and as a result the babies were traumatised during natural childbirth,” a police source said.

She forced mothers to undergo “aggressive childbirth, it was claimed, involving three men being brought in to push out the children.

Dr Sarmosyan – who faces up to five years in jail if convicted – was “proud” that her clinic had a 13 per cent rate of Caesarean births compared with the typical ratio of around one-third.

Tatiana Uyusova, 39, told how after an “amazing pregnancy” her daughter Olga, now three, was born with “multiple health problems” including brain damage from the “traumatic” birth.

She had asked for a Caesarean but claims gynaecologist Dr Sarmosyan has insisted on a natural birth which included “overdoes of epidural”.

Uyusova said Dr Sarmosyan supervised the birth as “three men” came to “push the baby out” using the Kristeller method, exerting fundal pressure in the second stage of labour.

This method has been banned in Russian since 1992.

Her child suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, as well as problems with gastrointestinal tract because of constant antibiotics, she said.

Another complainant Maria Kasatkina said she was unable to push her baby boy out in February this year but was nevertheless forced to undergo a natural birth.

The baby suffered from bleeding inside his skull, and has been in hospital for the past ten months, fed by catheter.

“My child became an invalid because of the doctors”, she told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Another mother named Milena complained to police after her child died 24 days after birth.

“It was Sarmosyan who made a decision not to perform a Caesarean for this women with extremely narrow hips and weak contractions,” said the police source.

“According to the patient, the head doctor told her: ‘Why should we cut you, you are too young’.”

Mum Irina Yudina said her weak newborn baby had been infected with meningitis, and has been in a coma in intensive care for six months.

Dr Sarmosyan, in her 40s, has been fired as have other medics at her clinic, said Moscow Health Department.

A judge remained her in custody for two months pending completion of the criminal case into the complaints.
