An 18-day-old baby girl died after she was crushed by her parents in bed, an inquest has found.

Asha-May Finney Hulme suffocated in January 2020 after the accident at her home in St Blazey, Cornwall.

Her parents from Manchester originally told police and paramedics that the newborn was found lifeless in her cot.

But later they revealed she was in their bed and suffocated under the arm of her father Michael Finney, the inquest in Truro heard.

A pathologist said she would have died from an upper airway obstruction which led to a hypoxic brain injury.

The baby’s mother Alise Hulme told the coroner that she awoke at 6am to find her baby under Mr Finney’s right arm.

She said several hours earlier she had asked her partner to put her back in her cot after a night feed – but that did not happen.

Mr Finney said: ‘I put Asha-May in her cot then fell asleep then got woken up by Alise with Ashe-May under my side.’

He said he did not know how she ended up beneath him but he told a medical professional at hospital that ‘it was all his fault’.

Concluding, coroner Andrew Cox said: ‘It’s now accepted in evidence that when both parents awoke on the morning of January 6, 2020, Asha-May as a matter of fact was in their bed and under the right arm of Mr Finney.

‘This is at odds with the version of events given by both of them to clinicians at the hospital and as Mr Finney was the person who last fed Asha-May, it seems likely to me he brought her into the bed.

‘It’s more likely than not she had been unintentionally overlain. I think it’s appropriate to record a conclusion of accidental death.’

No police action was taken.
